Preparedness of clinical supervisors to supervise podiatry students in Australia: A qualitative study

Clinical supervision is critical for preparing podiatry students clinical practice. However, little known about supervisors’ preparedness to supervise in This exploratory qualitative study explored perceptions of their Australia, terms training, challenges and suggestions improving quality. Semi-structured interviews with 11 supervisors (6 females, 5 males) were audio-recorded, transcribed thematically analysed. Watkins’ (1990) four-stage model characterising supervisor development was used inform analysis. Generally, did not feel adequately prepared supervisory role, largely because a lack formal training. Challenges included the time burden supervision, inconsistency regarding competence assessment standards, student-related issues such as perceived interest. Recommendations greater understanding students’ learning needs more training opportunities. opinion that partnering universities responsible ensuring quality practices. As generally felt unprepared supervise, this impacted on self-efficacy. Greater role clarity, support thus needed ensure are facilitate progression through developmental stages.
